All About Hinges

Nostalgic Warehouse’s carefully crafted steel hinges enhance the look of your doors without compromising durability and strength. Learn more about how to select hinges and what Nostalgic Warehouse offers.

The main parts of a hinge are the leaves, finial, knuckle, and hinge pin inside the knuckles.

Consider the type, weight and size of door when selecting hinges. Heavier doors will need more robust hinges, and exterior doors will need parts that resist the elements. Interior residential doors are common and can use a variety of hinges.

For doos up to five feet tall, use two hinges. Add an additional hinge for every  2 to 2.5 feet. A 7.5 foot-tall-door needs to have 3 hinges.

As far as placement goes, the top of the hinge should sit 5 inches below the top of the door. The bottom hinge should sit 10 inches above the floor. The applicable third hinge should then be centered between the top and bottom hinges.

When replacing existing hinges, pay attention to the size of the hinge, the corners, and the existing screw pattern.

Finials are the decorative tips on the top and bottom of the hinges. This added detail enhances your home and add character. We offer two finial options: Steeple finials add a dash of ornate elegance while ball finials lend a classic, timeless look.

Customize your hinges further by choosing between square corners or rounded corners with a ⅝” radius. Residential hinges for lightweight doors are available in 3.5” and 4” sizes while heavy duty hinges are available in 4” and 4.5” sizes and come with ball bearings for added longevity. Match your other Nostalgic Warehouse door hardware by choosing between our seven finishes.
